ADULT ADHD

Lifting the fog…

For medical diagnosis of ADHD (also known as ADD), symptoms must be present before age 12, but may be formally diagnosed later. It is essential to rule out other primary problems such as depression, bipolar disorder, learning disabilities, addiction, or head trauma. For example, effects of repeated concussions often look like ADHD but are not the condition as it is defined.

  • ADHD is one of the most inheritable mental health conditions. If you meet criteria, it is likely some biological relatives have it but may not be formally diagnosed.
  • After careful evaluation, an ADHD treatment plan may include:
    (1) Education
    (2) Structure and training in routines, such as daily exercise
    (3) Psychotherapy for co-existing and/or secondary issues
    (4) ADHD Coaching
    (5) Referral for medication, if interested. A medical doctor knowledgeable in ADHD is essential. Stimulants are considered 1st line treatment for ADHD.
  • Many ADHD adults respond well to stimulants such as Adderall or Vyvanse. These medications may be highly effective if combined with (1)-(4) above. For those not liking or responding well to stimulants, other options are available.
  • A lifetime of ADHD has its “emotional baggage,” which is often the hardest part to treat. Negative feedback from others is often internalized and transformed into negative self-talk.
  • ADHD involves the whole family. For best outcomes, it helps if other adult family members are aware of and support your treatment plan. If you are willing, inviting your significant other to be part of the evaluation is preferred.

Sometimes people come to me after being misdiagnosed for years with poor outcomes. A complete diagnosis including ADHD is an important key to improving quality of life.

In summary, if you answer “yes” to any of the following questions, let’s talk:

(a) Are you tired of being labeled as lazy, disorganized, or a poor listener?
(b) H
as your child been diagnosed with ADHD and you have similar issues?
(c) Is a blur of unfinished tasks and no routines painfully familiar?
